77 Ways to Find New Readers for Your Self Published Book! Book marketing guides edition by Laura Pepper Wu Reference eBooks

I'm a big fan of Laura's book marketing blog (30daysbooks.com/blog) and often tweet her article links to my peeps on Twitter. As soon as she put this book out, I had to buy it, and wasn't disappointed.

It's a quick read, which fits right into my busy schedule. I really appreciate authors like Laura that can write with brevity and clarity. Make no mistake though. The book lived up to the title of 77 Ways To Find New Readers. No matter what your degree of success has been as a self-published author, you'll find tips and tactics here that will make you say, "Wow, that's a good idea that I need to do" or "Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder. That needs to get done."

I'm not going to use all 77 (I'm too lazy to do anything that involves wearing out shoe leather) but there are definitely at least 20 ideas from the book that I will implement directly or some variation of. I've self-published a bunch of books and get decent royalty checks from Amazon, LSI, and my own web, and also read everything about book marketing that I can find. To sum up, I would say that this is the most complete list of usable marketing tactics I've read that also provide plenty of new ideas. Well done Laura!

77 Ways to Find New Readers for Your Self Published Book! Book marketing guides edition by Laura Pepper Wu Reference eBooks Reviews

Laura's book hones in on a problem that many eBook indie and self-published authors have when promoting their book, where to find that next reader. I chose her book because I wanted to get some more ideas to help some of the authors I work with (I'm a book publicist.) Compared to other books I have read on eBook that usually repeat the same old information, Laura's book contained some creative, easy to implement and inexpensive ideas. I was impressed by some of the ideas that were presented. The book, however, doesn't just focus on off-line promotion. It covers many other aspects of promotion including websites, public relations, PPC ads, blogging, page optimization. and social media. Another nice feature of this book was that hyperlinks (more links than I expected) were provided right in the text. The author's ability to provide a lot of creative ideas concisely is one of the best aspects of the book.

The book is fast-paced and concise, so I would not recommend it for the author who is just starting in social media. It's more for the indie or self-published author (even traditionally published) who is looking for more ideas on how to grow their promotion. The book does not go into a lot of detail for each recommendation, but the author provides just enough to give an author started. For the price for this book, it is definitely a treasure. I only wish I had read this book earlier. I will definitely be returning back to it.
If you're an indie writer, your time spent marketing is valuable. While many of the ideas in this book are creative and outside the box thinking, there is no cohesive strategy, just a random assortment of "Have you tried this yet? Yes, ok, well what about this?"

If you're looking for a formula for marketing success, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for creative ideas that may yeild OK results, maybe you'll like this book. But there are better, more effective ways to spend your precious marketing time, and they are not addressed in here.
Let's face it, there is no silver bullet. No magic bean that will make our self-published novels sprout into bestsellers overnight. I've been burned by "how-to-promote" books before, but not this time. Laura's advice just makes sense. Some of what she said I already knew, because I've done a bit of research myself, so my first impression was that she was NOT trying to sell me a ShamWow. DO NOT buy this book if you're looking for a trick, or a workaround, or a promise of success, because you won't find it. What you will find is good, solid advice on how to promote your book.

77 Ways is concise. I read it in about an hour. Yes, I skimmed over a few ideas because they either didn't apply to me or I knew about them already. I marked about twenty or so for further exploration (she provides links and examples to almost every example). The ideas and examples don't end with the last page of this book, but branch out like lines on a map. The basic format is that she states 77 marketing ideas, identifies pros and cons for different types of books (fiction or non-fiction, for example), explains why she thinks they work, then provides links to outside resources where you can find additional information.

I came away from that initial read (initial, because I bookmarked the parts I want to revisit) refreshed, like I had just participated in a think tank, with a renewed sense of my marketing strategy.
This book is one of the most practical, clear, usable products I've found--and I own them all! How can we authors take on that critical marketing role that traditional publishers used to do? Nowadays, whether indie or traditionally published, we must become our own book's major advocate (after all, who cares more about its success?), and Laura Pepper Wu gives direction to our campaign. Loaded with 77 understandable, doable strategies, this book goes way beyond that by providing dozens of links to elaborations and examples. I highly recommend this book to debut authors as well as established ones.
There are a thousand ebooks out there on book marketing, probably more. Many are junk. This one is not. It has 77 concrete ideas of things you can do today to promote your book. I read it in one sitting, with a pen in hand -- you'll want to do the same, so that you can jot down the ideas you want to try. There are many ideas here you haven't heard about before.

The book has many, many links to resources on the web. Many of the links are to the author's own blog, but the information there is quite good. She also uses other marketing experts' blogs as resources, so it isn't as if she is only promoting herself.

I've read about 15 books on book marketing in the last month. This one has been the best written and the most useful. Worth the cost.
